Executive Summary

As a result of positive feedback and demand from media partners, senior industry professionals and clients alike, Touch Briefings is pleased to introduce the inaugural edition of NanoBiotechnology 2006, a publication that will focus exclusively on developments in the use and application of nanotechnology in the biotech sphere.

The nanobiotechnology sector has experienced rapid growth over the last four years, and this progress shows no sign of abating. From inauspicious beginnings in the late 1990s, the nanobiotechnology industry reached a value of US$910 million in 2005 (BCC, 2005). By 2010 the market is forecast to reach US$3.4 billion, with an annual average growth rate exceeding 30% (BCC, 2005).

Indeed, nanobiotechnology is a key emerging area of scientific and technical opportunity for the bio world. Already, nanobiotechnology is beginning to generate substantial new insights into the functionality of biological systems and, as a result, nanotechnology is widely expected to lead to the design of entirely new classes of micro- and nanofabricated devices and systems. Certainly, the use of microfabrication as a method of miniaturising biological and biomedical devices is just beginning to reach the biotechnology industry community.

Key technological groups within this sphere include nanostructured materials, nanocomposites, nanoparticle applications and, crucially, nanodevice applications. The latter accounted for over 50% of the global market’s value in 2004 (BCC, 2005). Potential application for these technological groupings is ever-broadening and, as a consequence, it is the medical application of nanotechnology in the medical domain that will drive the nanotechnology market overall, forecast to account for 60.3% of total nanotechnology revenues in 2010.

Certainly, the outlook for the nanobiotechnology sector is bright: super-fast drug discovery at reduced costs, ultra-specific drug targeting and developments in the biosensors sector are just a few of the exciting developments on the medium-term horizon.

NanoBiotechnology 2006 will create a platform for the dissemination of information within the nano-biotechnology sector. It will bring together key professionals in the pharma and biotechnology sectors with leading figures in nanotechnology and nanobiotechnology companies.

NanoBiotechnology 2006 will focus on regulatory changes, and key trends in the field of nano-biotechnology, including key drivers in the commercialisation of nanobiotechnology discoveries, and featuring key case studies on leading breakthroughs and applications.
