HOSPITAL ENGINEERING & FACILITIES MANAGEMENT 2004 - JANUARY 2004 |
|
An international report and CD-ROM focusing on hospital and healthcare planning, development, preparedness and maintenance The international healthcare market continues to grow at healthy rate. US healthcare expenditure stands at $1.5 trillion (PwC) and the figure for the EU is just over $850 billion (Frost & Sullivan). Growth is being fuelled by the fact that hospitals are under tremendous pressure to respond to fierce competition amongst themselves as they strive to establish themselves as "centers of excellence" and compete for patients and the best human resources. In addition hospitals are having to manage and implement new technological development, comply with increasingly stringent regulations and standards and handle increasing numbers of births, emergency visits, outpatients services and an increasing ageing population, all of which is complicated even further by soaring pharmaceutical prices. A common feature of all international hospitals is cost-cutting measures and an international drive towards increased energy efficiency, which is forcing hospitals and healthcare institutions to invest in energy efficient equipment as well as considering space management and state-of-the-art architecture, interior design, and security systems to allow excellence in the provision of patient care. As a result, the current boom in hospital construction has brought hospital maintenance and engineering and more specifically strategic asset management to the very forefront of the debate on the future of healthcare. Hospital investment is high on a global scale and healthcare providers are upgrading their designs, equipment and furnishings and looking for contractors to conduct re-engineering projects to cope with increased demand.
