US ONCOLOGY REVIEW 2005 - DECEMBER 2004

Cancer is the second largest cause of death in developed countries, accounting for nearly one in five deaths. The financial costs of such a widespread killer are staggering, affecting both the individual as well as society as a whole. The US National Institutes of Health (NIH) estimated the overall annual costs for cancer in 2003 at US$189.5 billion within the US alone, with US$64.2 billion for direct medical costs (total of all health expenditures), US$16.3 billion for indirect morbidity costs (costs of loss of productivity due to illness) and US$109 billion for indirect mortality costs (cost of lost productivity due to premature death) (ACS 2004).
