Welcome to the first edition of European Critical Care & Emergency Medicine. This informative publication features a series
of articles that discuss and review many important issues relevant to emergency medicine and critical care physicians
throughout Europe – and indeed globally.
The last year has been a very positive one for the development of emergency medicine and there are now more than 50 countries
in the world that recognise the speciality. The European Society for Emergency Medicine (EuSEM) has been working together with
the Multidisciplinary Joint Committee on Emergency Medicine of the Union Européenne des Médecins Spécialistes (UEMS) in order
to define a competency-based European core curriculum for the speciality. This curriculum was approved and endorsed by the full
Council of UEMS at their plenary session in Brussels on 25 April 2009. At their subsequent meeting in Istanbul on 17 October, the
UEMS Council also gave approval to a Policy Statement on Emergency Medicine in Europe. This statement outlines the current
status of the speciality in Europe and details the steps that need to be taken to ensure the highest quality of emergency care for
patients – care that should be delivered by physicians trained in emergency medicine. The curriculum and policy statement are both
very important steps on the road towards the harmonisation of emergency medicine in Europe.
