Jorge B Cannata-Andía

Jorge B Cannata-Andía is President of the European Renal Association – European Dialysis and Transplant
Association (ERA-EDTA). He is also Head of the Bone and Mineral Research Unit at the Reina Sofia Research
Institute of the Hospital Universitario Central de Asturias, and Professor of Medicine at the University of Oviedo
in Spain. Professor Cannata-Andía’s research activities in bone metabolic disorders and vascular calcifications
have attracted more than 20 Ministry of Health and Science sponsorships and more than 30 research awards.
His research has resulted in over 300 original articles and editorials in peer-reviewed journals. ■
William G Couser
Immediate Past President, International Society of Nephrology (ISN)
William G Couser is Immediate Past President of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and Chairman of
their Commission on the Global Advancement of Nephrology (COMGAN). He is an Affiliate Professor of Medicine
in the Department of Medicine, Division of Nephrology at the University of Washington School of Medicine in
Seattle. Dr Couser is nationally and internationally recognised for both his clinical skills and his research into disease
processes of the kidney, particularly immunological mechanisms of kidney disease. He is certified by the American
Board of Internal Medicine in internal medicine and nephrology. Dr Couser is a member of the American Society
for Clinical Investigation (ASCI) and the American Association of Physicians (AAP), among other groups. ■
David Goldsmith
Consultant Nephrologist, Renal Unit, Guy’s Hospital, London
David Goldsmith is Consultant Nephrologist in the Renal Unit at Guy’s Hospital and has been in the same role at
St Thomas’ Hospital, London, since 1998. He was a Royal College of Physicians (RCP) tutor in 2000, an Executive
Member, Trustee and Honorary Secretary of the UK Renal Association from 2002 and has been an Executive
Council member of the European Renal Association – European Dialysis and Transplant Association (ERA-EDTA),
Chairman of Paper Selection for the Committee of the ERA-EDTA and a Member of the Scientific Committee. He
has published one book, eight chapters, 190 papers and 130 research abstracts, and has given 26 international
and 25 national lectures. ■
Olof Heimbürger
Secretary, International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD)
Olof Heimbürger is Secretary of the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD) and the Swedish Society
of Renal Medicine. He is a member of the Division of Renal Medicine in the Department of Clinical Science,
Intervention and Technology at the Karolinska Institutet, as well as Senior Physician and Director of Peritoneal
Dialysis at Karolinska University Hospital. Dr Heimbürger has more than 20 years of clinical nephrology
experience and wrote his PhD thesis on peritoneal transport. He has published more than 180 papers and
textbook chapters on peritoneal dialysis, nutrition, inflammation and cardiovascular disease in patients with
chronic renal failure. ■
Francesco Locatelli
Past President, European Renal Association – European Dialysis and Transplant Association (ERA-EDTA)
Francesco Locatelli is Past President of the European Renal Association – European Dialysis and Transplant
Association (ERA-EDTA), the International Society of Blood Purification (ISBP) and the Italian Society of Nephrology
(SIN). He is also Head of the Department of Nephrology, Dialysis and Urology at A Manzoni Hospital, Italy, and
Post-graduate Professor of Nephrology at the Universities of Brescia and Milan. Professor Locatelli is Chairman of
the Lombardy Regional Dialysis and Transplantation Registry and of the Board that devised the European Best
Practice Guidelines. He is on the Board of the Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (KDQI) and the Board
of Directors of the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) initiative. ■
