Althea Mahon
Past President, European Dialysis and Transplant Nurses Association/
European Renal Care Association (EDTNA/ERCA)
Althea Mahon is Past President of the European Dialysis & Transplant Nurses Association/European Renal
Care Association (EDTNA/ERCA), an association set up to provide educational initiatives to assist in the
development of all renal healthcare professionals. She is a Consultant Nurse at Barts and the London NHS
Trust in London, where she is responsible for the chronic kidney disease screening programme. Ms Mahon
is also a Visiting Honorary Senior Lecturer at City University. She has been working in renal care for the past
15 years in all areas of nephrology nursing and represents renal nursing nationally in many policy groups. She
is a specialist advisor on nephrology for the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). ■
Jitka Pancirová
President, European Dialysis and Transplant Nurses Association/
European Renal Care Association (EDTNA/ERCA)
Jitka Pancirová is the President of the European Dialysis and Transplant Nurses Association/European Renal Care
Association (EDTNA/ERCA) and, for the last 13 years, Head Nurse at a private haemodialysis centre in Prague. She
has been the Czech Key Member of the EDTNA/ERCA since 1997, the Co-Key Member Mentor since 2001 and
Research Board European Practice Database Co-ordinator since 2003, when she also joined EDTNA/ERCA’s
Executive Committee. Her area of speciality is quality and adequacy of treatment, implementation of clinical
standards, anaemia management and vascular access. Since June 2006 she has worked as a Quality Co-ordinator
for a private chain of dialysis units. Ms Pancirová has presented lectures at many national and international
meetings and has a keen interest in raising the profile of nephrology nurses in Europe. ■
Claudio Ronco
President, International Society for Hemodialysis (ISHD)
Claudio Ronco is President of the International Society for Hemodialysis (ISHD) and Director of the
Department of Nephrology at St Bortolo Hospital in Vicenza. He is a councillor of the International Society of
Nephrology (ISN) and is Editor-in-Chief of International Journal of Artificial Organs. He has earned numerous
awards and honours, including the International Medal of Excellence from the National Kidney Foundation
(NKF) and honorary membership of the Spanish Society of Nephrology (SSN) in 2004. He has organised
several congresses and meetings in the area of nephrology and intensive care and is a member of several
advisory groups for clinical trials and dialysis research. ■
Jan J Weening
Past President, International Society of Nephrology (ISN)
Jan J Weening is Chair of the Global Outreach Program and Past President of the International Society of
Nephrology (ISN). He is Chairman of COMGAN, the ISN Commission on Global Advancement of Nephrology.
He is Professor of Pathology at the University of Amsterdam and Chairman of the Department of Pathology
at the Academic Medical Centre. From 1988 to 1991, he was Professor of Immunopathology at the
University of Groningen, having previously been Associate Professor of Pathology at the University of Leiden.
From 1993 to 1999, Professor Weening was Secretary General of the ISN. His prime scientific interests are
renal pathology and pathophysiology, fields in which he has written more than 170 articles and contributed
to a number of books. ■
