W
elcome to this first issue of European Renal Disease 2007, which covers a wide range of interesting issues in the
field of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Kidney disease is a leading cause of mortality, both in Europe and worldwide,
and the number of patients requiring the care of nephrologists is ever rising. This review aims to provide an overview of
current trends and future developments in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of kidney disease.
The first section is devoted to several current issues in clinical nephrology, including an article on the problem and assessment
of acute kidney injury. Moving on to more specific issues in the management of complications of renal disease, there is a
thought-provoking section on anaemia. This discusses the different profiles, benefits and limitations of erythropoiesis-
stimulating agents in its management.
In addition, the hot topics of calcium phosphate metabolism, vascular calcifications, hypertension and cardiovascular risk are
addressed by several investigators, underlining the role of high serum phosphate in morbidity and mortality in patients with
CKD and the need for better phosphate control. Several authors discuss these issues. Moreover, there is a specific overview
of the additional risk of mineral and bone disorder in CKD patients.
A series of articles covering the various aspects of haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are included, followed by the latest
news in different therapies for better immunosuppression and tolerance in transplant recipients – including a very interesting
look at organ quality.
To conclude, there is a section on the importance of nutrition in managing the care of CKD patients. This includes discussion
of the role of growth hormones on biomarkers and the importance of nutritional support for haemodialysis patients.
This broad review contains many interesting articles written by respected nephrologists, providing the community,
nephrology consultants and healthcare directors with useful information about new developments in the diagnosis and
management of CKD.
I would like to thank all the contributing authors for their excellent reviews, which I believe you will find extremely useful in
your general practice, and of course our advisory panel and media partners for their continued support of European Renal
Disease 2007. ■
