Epidemiology Co-ordinator, Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC)
Kathy Aureden, MS, MT(ASCP) SI, CIC, co-manages the Epidemiology Program for Sherman Health in Elgin,
Illinois. She is responsible for all aspects of infection prevention and control for the hospital setting, and serves as
consultant to the ancillary facilities of the health system. She is an active member of several associations, including
the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC). ■
Joseph M Colacino, PhD
President Elect, International Society for Antiviral Research (ISAR)
Joseph M Colacino, PhD, is President Elect of the International Society for Antiviral Research (ISAR). He is also Vice
President of Drug Discovery at PTC Therapeutics, where he oversees drug discovery activities across therapeutic areas.
He has previously worked for Eli Lilly as Research Acquisition Advisor, Director of Virology, and Director of Infectious
Diseases Research. Dr Colacino is widely published and serves on several specialist Editorial Boards. ■
Clifford W Houston, PhD
President, American Society for Microbiology (ASM)
Clifford W Houston, PhD, is President of the American Society for Amicrobiology (ASM). He is also Associate Vice
President for Educational Outreach and holds the Herman Barnett Distinguished Endowed Professorship in
Microbiology at the University of Texas Medical Branch. Dr Houston has recently been appointed to the National
Institutes of General Medical Sciences Advisory Council. ■
Joseph F John, Jr, MD
Chief, Medical Subspecialty Services, Ralph H Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center, and
Professor of Medicine, Medical University of South Carolina
Joseph F John, Jr, MD, serves as the Associate Chief of Staff for Education at Ralph H Johnson VA Medical Center,
Charleston. He has a sustaining interest in the mechanisms and control of antibiotic resistance. Dr John was part
of the team that initially demonstrated the importance of bacterial plasmids in the spread of antibiotic resistance
genes in Gram-negative hospital pathogens. He is an active member of many organizations. ■
Keith P Klugman, MB, BCh, PhD, FRCPath (Lond)
Member at Large, Executive Committee, International Society of Infectious Diseases (ISID)
Keith P Klugman, MB, BCh, PhD, FRCPath (Lond), is the William H Foege Chair of Global Health in the Hubert
Department of Global Health at the Rollins School of Public Health and Professor of Medicine in the Division of
Infectious Diseases of the School of Medicine, Emory University, in Atlanta. Professor Klugman is Chair of the
International Committee of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), the largest single life science society. ■
Ron MacInnis
Director, Policy and Programs, International AIDS Society (IAS)
Ron MacInnis is Director of Policy and Programs at the International AIDS Society (IAS). Mr MacInnis has worked
around the world on public health and HIV/AIDS advocacy and program development for two decades. He has
served as Director of the Global AIDS Program at the Global Health Council, and as Editor of the Global Health
Council’s AIDSLink publication. He has been living openly and healthily with HIV/AIDS for 15 years. ■
