Robert Gunzburg
President, EuroSpine Society
Robert Gunzburg is President of the EuroSpine Society and General Secretary of the International Society for
the Study of the Lumbar Spine (ISSLS). He is also a Visiting Professor at the Free University of Brussels.
Dr Gunzburg occupies seven editorial positions and fellowships, and has authored 92 international papers,
14 books and seven book chapters, as well as delivering 117 international podium paper communications
and chairing 24 international congresses. He graduated cum laude from the Catholic University of Leuven in
1981 and obtained his PhD at the Free University of Brussels. ■
Apostolos Karantanas
President Elect, European Society of Musculoskeletal Radiology (ESSR)
Apostolos Karantanas is President Elect of the European Society of Musculoskeletal Radiology (ESSR) and
an Associate Professor of Radiology at the University of Crete. He is also Chief of the Musculoskeletal Section
and Head of the Computed Tomography Department at Heraklion University Hospital. Professor Karantanas
is a reviewer for six European and international journals and a member of the Editorial Board of European
Radiology. He is the author of 16 book chapters, one book on the theory and praxis of magnetic resonance
imaging and 180 international conference announcements. ■
Hakon Kofoed
President Elect, European Foot and Ankle Society (EFAS)
Hakon Kofoed is President Elect of the European Foot and Ankle Society (EFAS) and an Associate Professor
of Orthopaedics at the University of Copenhagen. He is also Director of the Foot and Ankle Section,
Orthopaedic University Clinic, Frederiksberg Hospital and President of the Danish Foot and Ankle Society.
Professor Kofoed has been a specialist orthopaedic advisor to the Danish National Health Board since 2004,
and has presented numerous papers and book chapters at international conferences. He received his MD
from the University of Copenhagen in 1972. ■
Tore K Kvien
Past President, European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR)
Tore K Kvien is Past President of the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR). He has also served as
Head of the Department of Rheumatology at Diakonhjemmet Hospital, Oslo, since 1994, and as a Professor
of Rheumatology at the University of Oslo since 1996. His major research activities include epidemiological
and health service research with a focus on frequently occurring diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis,
osteoarthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. Professor Kvien has contributed to over 170 original research
publications in international peer-reviewed journals. ■
Lars Lidgren
Chairman, International Steering Committee, Bone and Joint Decade (BJD)
Lars Lidgren is Chairman of the International Steering Committee of the Bone and Joint Decade (BJD) 2000–2010,
which has established national action networks in 61 countries, and holds the University Chair of Orthopaedics
at the University of Lund, Sweden. He is the author of more than 250 original publications, has served as a thesis
advisor for 25 graduate students and holds more than 200 patents or patent applications. Since 1979, he has
been involved in the internationally renowned Swedish Knee Arthroplasty Register. ■
