need to be continually monitored and assessed to ensure they
are performing correctly and do not compromise the product
and, importantly, the safety of the patient. Overall, technology
will enable the planning and operational functions of the 21st
Century Supply Chain Ecosystem to be integrated along its
length and not divided into silos with minimal communication.
A Stronger Network
The 21st Century Supply Chain Ecosystem needs to be smart, fast
and efficient without being unduly expensive.

global reach so must support a global operating model across
the extended enterprise and throughout the product life-
cycle.

Furthermore, the 21st Century Supply Chain Ecosystem
must become the conduit that fully connects pharma with the
wider healthcare network; it is the means by which they can
respond better and in real time to market dynamics while
supporting patients and healthcare providers by providing the
right products and services, no matter where operations lie in
the world.
Targeted treatments will increase the complexity of
development, manufacturing and distribution. Within the
marketplace, outcomes-based payments and greater
involvement of patients in managing their treatments will
require more transparency and faster communication between
all members of the healthcare ecosystem – particularly beyond
the factory gate. Strengthening the integration with these
stakeholders can allow valuable information to permeate the
whole supply network, giving pharma deeper insights into
patient preference and response to treatment. Realtime
information about purchasing decisions will become available,
allowing demand to be forecast with more accuracy; effectively
