or known CAD. However, a comprehensive assessment of CAD should include both coronary anatomy and its haemodynamic significance. Combination of different non-invasive imaging techniques has been shown to have excellent accuracy in detecting flow-limiting stenoses compared with invasive approaches, and this type of ‘hybrid’ imaging may serve as a gatekeeper prior to revascularisation.82,87

With this in mind, the future of non-invasive

imaging may very well head towards a multidisciplinary approach involving cardiology, nuclear medicine and radiology in order to optimise patient care. n

Kim Allan Williams is a Professor of Medicine and Radiology and Director of Nuclear Cardiology at The University of Chicago School of Medicine. He specialises in clinical cardiology, nuclear medicine and nuclear cardiology. He attended the College and the Pritzker School of Medicine at The University of Chicago, followed by an internal medicine residency at Emory University and overlapping fellowships in cardiology, clinical pharmacology and nuclear medicine at the University of Chicago.
